SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM
Solar Heat Exchangers successfully tendered for the supply and installation of a various hybrid solar/heat pump hot water systems totalling 91,500L for the Sasol Twistdraai hostel facility in Secunda, Free State.
Established in 1987, Solar Heat Exchangers is a leading South African specialist in energy efficient water heating applications and is proud of its reputation for technically superior products and quality workmanship. The company’s products cover various renewable energy and energy efficient water heating applications including process heat, sanitary hot water, space heating and swimming pool heating using solar, heat pumps & gas as a heat source. Solar Heat Exchangers is a wholly owned subsidiary of Solsquare, a company established in 2007 specialising in Solar Photovoltaic system design and installations.
CHARACTERISTIC’S OF THE SYSTEM
The hot water systems were specified by Fulz Consulting with a 1,500L or 3,000L hot water storage capacity per accommodation block at the hostel complex. In total 21 of the 1,500 litre systems were installed and 20 of the 3,000 litre systems installed.
PLANT ROOMS FOR STORAGE VESSELS
The hostel complex consists of 41 plant rooms. The various plant rooms house either 1,500L or 3,000L insulated and cladded hot water storage tanks heated via plate heat exchangers with solar as a primary heat source and heat pumps as a backup in case of no or low solar contribution.
MODULAR SYSTEMS SIZING
The 1,500L tanks are heated with 10 x 2sqm solar collectors and the 3,000L with 20 x 2sqm solar collectors. Solar collectors are mounted on pitched roofs facing north.
SAFETY PROTOCOL & TRAINING
All the staff were required to complete a full safety induction training program. For working at heights require harnesses and specific safety equipment. If any of the staff members are found in violation of the safety regulations the whole project could be put in jeopardy.
MAINTENANCE & INSTALLATION CHALLENGES
Solar Heat Exchangers has a Service Level Agreement with the client and to date looks after the annual maintenance of the systems. Freeze protection of the system is achieved through the glycol filled closed loop circulation systems. Stagnation protection is achieved with the expansion vessels.
