SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM
Solar Heat Exchangers successfully tendered for the design, supply and installation of a 4,000L hybrid solar / heat pump hot water system for the Eskom Megawatt Park Kitchen Canteen Facility in Sunninghill, Gauteng.
Established in 1987, Solar Heat Exchangers is a leading South African specialist in energy efficient water heating applications and is proud of its reputation for technically superior products and quality workmanship. The company’s products cover various renewable energy and energy efficient water heating applications including process heat, sanitary hot water, space heating and swimming pool heating using solar, heat pumps & gas as a heat source. Solar Heat Exchangers is a wholly owned subsidiary of Solsquare, a company established in 2007 specialising in Solar Photovoltaic system design and installations.
CHARACTERISTIC’S OF THE SYSTEM
The hot water system was designed in consultation with the client after measuring the daily hot water consumption and time of use patterns of the existing kitchen/canteen facility.
PLANT ROOM FOR STORAGE VESSEL
The plant room houses 1 x 4,000L insulated hot water storage tank heated via a plate heat exchanger with an array of 30 x 2sqm flat plate solar collectors and backup up by a 44kW heat pump in case of no or low solar contribution.
The plant room slab had to be structurally checked to confirm the new and increased hot water storage capacity for the solar system. The system was specified and includes live ‘real time’ measurement and verification which allows for energy saving/consumption monitoring.
FRAMES FOR THE PANEL INSTALLATION
The collectors are mounted on a flat concrete roof on inclined frames. The 30 solar collectors are mounted in 2 rows and plumbed in 2 banks of 15 collectors.
MAINTENANCE & INSTALLATION CHALLENGES
Solar Heat Exchangers calls for a new Service Level Agreement annually with the client to look after the maintenance of the system.
SUMMARY OF THE SYSTEM
An overall well designed system. Closed loop circulation with glycol to protect the system against freezing and expansion vessels to protect against stagnation.
Stunning to have ESKOM procure a system like this.
