SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM

Solar Heat Exchangers worked with the professional team at RSV Engineers. Solar Heat Exchangers designed, supplied and installed a 42,600L hot water system for the Brakfontein Industrial Change House in Limpopo province.
Established in 1987, Solar Heat Exchangers is a leading South African specialist in energy efficient water heating applications and is proud of its reputation for technically superior products and quality workmanship. The company’s products cover various renewable energy and energy efficient water heating applications including process heat, sanitary hot water, space heating and swimming pool heating using solar, heat pumps & gas as a heat source. Solar Heat Exchangers is a wholly owned subsidiary of Solsquare, a company established in 2007 specialising in Solar Photovoltaic system design and installations.

 

CHARACTERISTIC’S OF THE SYSTEM

The hot water system was designed by Solar Heat Exchangers with a 42,600L solar hot water storage capacity. Usage is primarily for ablution facility.

 

PLANT ROOM FOR STORAGE VESSEL

The plant room houses 5 x 14,200L hot water storage tanks in series. The first 3 x 14,200L solar tanks are pre-heaters to the second 2 x 14,200L. These are electrically backed up tanks in case of no or low solar contribution. The solar storage tanks are heated by an array of 270 x 2sqm solar collectors.

The plant room is positioned relatively central to the 3 change house roofs which accommodate the solar collectors. An ideal winter time solar collector angle was chosen although the existing roof pitch might well have sufficed. The pitched roof frames however act as additional fall barriers for any service & maintenance staff working on the roofs. The 270 solar collectors are mounted on 3 roofs and plumbed in 9 banks of 10 collectors. The arrays are sized with even banks for ease of balancing flow through a complex closed circuit pipe network.

 

FRAMES FOR THE PANEL INSTALLATION

This ensure optimal functioning of the system and contributes to the financial success of this specific installation.

In the design it was decided to lift the inclination angle of the panels. The new angle facilitates “self-cleaning” with dust that might settle on the panels. It also optimizes solar radiation for winter periods and the panel’s maintenance is thereby simplified due to easy access to panels and pipe work.

 

MAINTENANCE & INSTALLATION CHALLENGES

This ensure optimal functioning of the system and contributes to the financial success of this specific installation.

Solar Heat Exchangers trained local workforce to do on site annual maintenance of the system.

Note: Due to the liquidation of the main contractor during construction and the subsequent lack of budget to properly complete the full hot water system. Although the solar system was successfully commissioned, the hot water storage tanks were not insulated when the contract was completed.

 

SUMMARY OF THE SYSTEM

An impressive design. A classic closed circuit loop on the collector panels and full functionality with expansion vessels and plate heat exchanger used in thermal heat transfer to the storage vessels.
