SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM
Solar Heat Exchangers successfully tendered for the supply and installation of a 10,000L solar hot water system for the ABB Distribution Centre in Modderfontein, Gauteng.
Established in 1987, Solar Heat Exchangers is a leading South African specialist in energy efficient water heating applications and is proud of its reputation for technically superior products and quality workmanship. The company’s products cover various renewable energy and energy efficient water heating applications including process heat, sanitary hot water, space heating and swimming pool heating using solar, heat pumps & gas as a heat source. Solar Heat Exchangers is a wholly owned subsidiary of Solsquare, a company established in 2007 specialising in Solar Photovoltaic system design and installations.
CHARACTERISTIC’S OF THE SYSTEM
The hot water system was designed by Ivan Goldsmith Consulting with a 30,000L hot water storage capacity.
HEAT RECOVERY COMBINED WITH SOLAR
The plant room houses 3 x 10,000L insulated hot water storage tanks in series. The first tank in series is pre-heated by waste heat from the buildings HVAC system via a plate heat exchanger (heat recovery). This feeds the 10,000L solar storage tank which is heated by an array of 72 x 2sqm flat plate solar collectors. This tank pre-feeds the 10,000L electrical backup tank in case of no or low solar contribution.
MAXIMIZING SOLAR THERMAL LOOP EFFICIENCY
The plant room is positioned almost 100m linear from the solar collectors on the warehouse roof which is over 10m high. This meant that the closed circuit volume was considerably larger than normal and had to be calculated correctly to accommodate the correct glycol mix. Circulation pumps also had to be sized correctly to accommodate the extensive pressure drop and flow restriction on the closed circuit when compared to open circuit. The system was installed with thermal insulation and galvanized cladded piping for longevity and a built in closed circuit charging station for ease of commissioning and future servicing. Insulation ensures optimal efficiency in the solar loop by minimizing thermal losses from the solar energy gained.
UNIQUE FRAME INSTALLATION
No roof penetration was permitted so clamp on fixtures had to be used to secure the pitched mounting frames. The 72 solar collectors are mounted in 2 long rows to accommodate the available roof space. These collectors are plumbed in 6 banks of 12 collectors.
SYSTEM MAINTENANCE FOR LONG TERM PRODUCT LIFE
Solar Heat Exchangers has a Service Level Agreement with the client and to date looks after the annual maintenance of the system. This ensure optimal functioning of the system and contributes to the financial success of this specific installation.
SUMMARY OF THE SYSTEM
A stunning design that incorporates industrial heat recovery with solar thermal energy. A great showcase system of process heat that can be supplied with renewable thermal technology. Another unique feature is the 12 panel series connection that was made possible by a well thought through design with pipe diameters, flow rates and pump sizing.
The maintenance contract is essential to ensure that the systems deliver on expected design life and optimal efficiency. Maintenance aspects have been core in the system design and have been well thought through to ensure minimal down-time.
